Nordic Pole Walking

Nordic Pole Walking

Nordic Pole Walking originated decades ago when a group of Finnish cross-country skiers decided to use their ski poles to enhance the benefits of fitness walking during the off-season. They found that by using their poles, they measurably increased their cardiovascular and muscle well-being, as well as improving the effects of their training programs. These improvements have been noticed both by the athletes themselves and subsequent medical studies.

Nordic Pole Walking did not formally become defined until 1997 when the ski equipment manufacturer Exel launched their first line of fitness walking poles specifically developed for this purpose. One of the unique aspects of these poles is the attached wrist straps.

Benefits of Nordic Pole Walking include:

  • Burning up to 46% more calories than traditional walking (natural weight loss)
  • Strengthening of core muscles, including toning abs, buttocks, and back muscles (stronger muscles)
  • Up to 30% reduction of stress to knees, hips, and back
  • Increase in strength and endurance
  • Up to 22% enhancement of cardiovascular performance (strengthens heart)
  • Improvement in posture and body alignment
  • Reduction of pain and tension in neck, shoulders, and back
  • Promotion of positive and healthy lifestyle by connection of mind, body, and spirit
  • Beneficial for all levels of fitness
  • Lower negative hormones and increase positive hormone levels
  • Ability to enjoy nature while exercising
  • Ability to socialize at the same time as working out.
